Biltmore Farms President, John “Jack” F.A.V Cecil said this, “What we thought was so important in Olmsted’s work was that he used nature and he used various amenities to bring people together — people of different walks of life, of different ages, different incomes, different situations, with family or empty-nesters.”

What Locals Say About Biltmore Neighborhoods

“Gated community aside, there’s no point in moving to [The Biltmore neighborhoods”] just for the ‘Ashevilleness of it all’ if you are going to live on the south side. It’s just a bland expanse of big-box stores and traffic lights… there is nothing [especially] “Asheville” about it.”

Reddit Commenter

There is some truth to this statement, especially in terms of some of the urban village centers. Some of the master planned communities lack the same vibe and soul of downtown Asheville.

However, the lovely gated communities retain the deep connection to nature that so many locals enjoy. Of course, downtown Asheville is a short drive away.

That said, if you want to choose a property that is immersed in Asheville culture, there are plenty of other luxury properties outside of the Biltmore neighborhoods.

“Try the Montford area. It is the most vibrant, inclusive, character rich, livable neighborhood in Asheville and with your housing budget you could actually afford a house there. [In my opinion,] the Rambles and Biltmore Forest are generally exclusive, restricted, white, and conservative.”

“I agree that Montford is worth a look, but would also add Kenilworth. Like Montford it is an older, established neighborhood, but it is artsier, has a more eclectic mix of people and housing options, and the three sets of people I know who live there (who vary in age, ethnicity, economic status, and length of residency) all love it. These are both places which have a “sense of themselves” as neighborhoods.”

“[Kenilworth] is very diverse and with a very strong sense of community. Rooted in racial/social justice and faith, but it seems to be the good kind of faith community (e.g. LGBT advocacy, helping the poor). It’s also very close to downtown and the hospital.”

The locals above make excellent points that Montford and Kenilworth are strong alternatives for luxury residences with a more authentic Asheville vibe. In addition, you may want to view properties in Beaver Lake, Grove Park, and Sunset Mountain.
